My academic and research interests are in the field of chemistry . This includes organic (Lipids, Biosynthesis, Natural products) and analytical chemistry ( Chromatographic systems: GC & HPLC and spectroscopic: GC-MS, NMR, UV & IR). The main research activities and publications were achieved in the following subjects:
- Analytical and synthetic studies of Boronic Acids and their derivatives.
- The developing of new derivatisation techniques with micro scale reactions for a wide range of GC (packed & capillary) and GC-MS applications.
- The development of Phenol-Formaldehyde resins and it has mainly concentrated on the separation, purification and identification of the polymethylols of phenol and their derivatives. A new HPLC method was invented to analyse these phenolic resins and separate them on a quantitative level at high pH.
- The separation and identification of the potential impurities associated with the synthesis of the anti-inflammatory steroidal drug (Beclomethasone Dipropionate).
- The derivatisation of Bile alcohols for GC-MS.
- Cyclic boronate esters as characteristic derivatives of chatechols and their comparison with acetates and trimethylsilyl ethers.
- Preparative studies on catechol cyclic boronates.
- Selectivity in acetylation of Tyramine and its analogues.
- Partial synthesis of some cholesterol analogues and isotope labelled sterols for use as internal standards, in blood analysis.
- Routes to side chain hydroxy sterols by the synthesis from the bile acids or from cleavage products of stigmasterol separation and characterisation of the key intermediate epimeric compounds of cholesterol analogues side chain synthesis.
- Synthesis of carbohydrates alkyl esters and ethers for the studies of their liquid crystal properties.
- Separation and isolation of sterols from Palm Oil.
- Separation of carotenoids, including vitamin E from Palm Oil and their studies by HPLC-PDA.
- Chromatographic and chemical studies of Bacopa Monnierta (BRAHMI).
- Isolation and identification of minor components in Ocotea Caparrapi Oil (Balsam Oil).
- Methods development and validation for drugs analysis (qualitative and quantitative) by HPLC, GC & GC-MS).
- Determination of n-alkanes and PAHs in airborne particulate and road side dust.
- HPLC and GC-MS studies for the extracted and separated hydrocarbon groups in coal samples from Batu Arang , Selangor and Sarawak - Malaysia.
- The development and invention of new packing materials for Gas Chromatography (GC) analysis of petroleum hydrocarbons (Gas - Liquid C1-C44, including the aliphatics and aromatics). The Patent application entitled "Stationary Phases for Gas Chromatography" with patent pending No. PCT/SGO2/00062.
My latest research interest is in the synthesis and development of new Polymer-Proton Batteries. This new technology is using proton exchange-type conductive polymer electrodes to develop a high energy density electrochemical device with 10 times the power of double-layer capacitors, matching the efficiency of lead batteries and giving it the highest capacity of any electrochemical device in the world.
