Professor Dlawer Ala' Aldeen
MBChB, DTM&H, MSc, PhD, FRCPath
I am a medical graduate, specialised in Clinical Microbiology. My main task in my job is to treat patients with infection, carry out research and teach undergraduate (medical) and postgraduate (MSc and PhD) students. I have had a long-standing research interest in the study of bacterial infections. My main focus is to understand the molecular basis of human-bacterial interaction with the aim of developing vaccines and novel therapeutic agents against deadly bacteria, such as Neisseria meningitidis, which causes meningitis and septicaemia. With members of my research group (Molecular bacteriology and Immunology Group) we have invented several vaccines against N. meningitidis and discovered several bacterial genes that are considered virulence factors and, therefore, vaccine targets. I have also been interested in the study of the host genetic response to Campylobacter jejuni (main cause of food poisoning and gastroenteritis) and staphylococcus aureus (major cause of sepsis in the hospital and the community).
